Asbestos Abatement at Scarborough Swimming Pool
Project Introduction:
UK Environmental & Asbestos Solutions Limited (UK-EAS) was directly appointed by Scarborough Swimming Pool to carry out comprehensive asbestos removal operations in preparation for the facility's planned demolition. Built in 1973, a period when the use of asbestos was prevalent, the pool had been vacant since 2017 and was set for demolition in 2021.
Historical Context and Removal Strategy:
Recognizing the challenges posed by the extensive use of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during the original construction of the pool, our team at UK-EAS was tasked with a critical mission. The presence of ACMs like Sprayed Asbestos Insulation, Asbestos Insulating Boards (AIB), and textured coatings required a robust removal strategy to ensure safety and compliance with environmental standards.
Detailed Asbestos Removal Process:
Our expert team conducted a thorough removal process across various parts of the swimming pool structure:
Sprayed Asbestos Insulation: This hazardous material was removed from the poolside walls where it had been applied as thermal insulation.
AIB Usage: We addressed AIB panels located around the skylights, columns throughout the building, seating areas, and external facias and soffits, all of which posed significant health risks.
Textured Coatings: These were carefully stripped from all changing room walls, where they had been used for their durable and water-resistant properties.
Safety Measures and Compliance:
The entire project was completed within a stringent five-week timeline, adhering closely to safety protocols to protect our team and prevent any environmental contamination. The careful removal and disposal of asbestos from both the interior and exterior of the building were critical in clearing the way for the safe demolition of the outdated facility.
Project Completion and Impact:
Successfully completing the asbestos removal at Scarborough Swimming Pool allowed demolition processes to commence on schedule, eliminating any asbestos-related risks. This project showcases UK-EAS’s capacity to handle asbestos abatement in complex environments, reinforcing our reputation as a leader in environmental and asbestos removal solutions.
